Founder, Tracy Hepler, is living green and looking good in her recent feature on Eco-Chick. Hepler showed off her eco-chic fashion sense in a vintage blouse and locally made jeans. Hepler told Eco-Chick that she loves the vintage shops on Melrose and in downtown L.A., adding, “I like that the pieces have a story before they come to me. ”

Reduce, reuse, recycle and be inspired this Halloween season!

Hey guys and dolls! What’s the trick to a great Halloween costume? A local vintage treat! By shopping vintage, you save money, help your carbon footprint and resurrect a look that deserves a second life. Here are some of our city’s most economical consignment stores–from Hollywood to Santa Monica. Shop only if you dare…

LA Vintage – Online only

Just like rummaging through your older sister’s closet in the 80s. LA Vintage is my fave online store for pop star apparel and gently-worn vintage shoes and boots. Construct a totally outrageous Gem costume. Jeans on acid go for only $20!

Wasteland – Studio City, West Hollywood, Santa Monica

Selective for a reason. Wasteland is just a cut above other buy back stores by the plethora of designer labels. Glamour yourself in fancy scores to the likes of Zsa Zsa Gabor or Rock Hudson. Chloé suit jacket anyone?

Goodwill – Hollywood, Santa Monica

You just can’t tame a classic…and Los Angeles Goodwills are definitely the best. Grab an unwanted shirt from a dried-up 70s daytime series and give it another life as Anchorman Ron Burgundy. Mustache not included.

Shareen Vintage – Downtown

Welcome to gaga-fest! Shareen Vintage is for ladies who are comfortable in feathers, fur, corsets and eek…dressing in front of others. Celebrate your inner Bond Girl with a Russian princess or sassy showgirl ensemble. Celebrity hours, do check online.

Jet Rag – West Hollywood

Dollar, dollar bill y’all. Jet Rag is known for its stand-in-line Sundays for incredible $1 bin deals! Keep your elbows out and alert while you sift goodies with other Hollywood Hipsters. Future pirates and techno geeks beware.

Beat the lines, shop early!

Our co-founders have been sharing their favorite spots with others this past week, but then we realized that we hadn’t shared it with YDT Readers…Ekk. So without further ado, here are our co-founders favorite things to do in L.A. on any given weekend.

Get Your Green Drink On: Drink and socialize with other like-minded Angelenos at one of the six rotating “LA Green Drinks.” Tonight, you’ll find the Valley Edition Happening at the Mindful Nest in Burbank. Learn more at lagreendrinks.blogspot.com.

Volunteer with Eco Non-Profits: Roll up your sleeves and prepare to get dirty. Whether you’re interested in beach clean-ups, forest restoration, healthy eating or planting trees, you’re sure to find an organization that will appreciate your helping hands. We can’t say enough about the good work courtesy of local organizations like Treepeople and Heal the Bay. On this weekend’s radar, Heal the Bay is hosting a Benefit Concert at the G2 Gallery in Venice on Friday and TreePeople is participating in a Million Trees LA planting in Brentwood.

Munch on Eco-Friendly Taco Trucks: Food trucks are in like never before, and fortunately alot of them have some eco-cred. You can follow some of our favorite ones on Twitter to find out where they’ll be next. @Gastrobus @bordergrill @coolhaus @Greentruck @letsbefrank @frysmith

Walk in LA: They say that no body walks in LA, we’ll now that just ain’t true. L.A.’s a great place to walk, if you know where. Some of our favorite walks include Runyon Canyon, the Santa Monica and Echo Parks Stairs. For a more detailed selection of walks, check out the book Walking in LA. You’d be surprise at the walkable gems you’ll find around the city.

Re-Discover Vintage: As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” and there’s a lot of treasure to be had in the vintage stores and flea markets surrounding LA.

On our radar is the Fairfax Flea Market in West Hollywood, (every Sunday at Fairfax and Melrose) Warwick in Echo Park (at Sunset Blvd and Echo Park Ave) and Give + Take in Play Del Rey (at Culver and Vista Del Mar).

Shop at your Farmer’s Market: Let’s face it, most people envy us because we’re blessed with pretty good weather year round. So take advantage of the good weather by eating delicious food grown locally. Not only are you supporting local farms, you’re eating freshest stuff out there (even the best chefs around town are shopping at the farmer’s market). We love the energy at the Hollywood and Santa Monica markets, both take place on Sunday. Find out where you’re nearest farmer’s market takes place at http://www.farmernet.com/events/cfms.

If you’re at the Hollywood Farmer’s Market on Sunday, check out the Farmer’s Kitchen, a non-profit kitchen that is serving up fresh food cooked straight from the market and is only open on Sundays.

This month, both vintage and eco enthusiasts are flocking to Warwick, where during the month of November, the Echo Park boutique on Sunset will be hosting Eco in the Echo, featuring sustainable, locally made and eco-friendly fashion, design and art.

Owner Justin Warwick, whose one-year-old shop specializes in restyled and high-end vintage fashion and accessories, was keen on throwing an event that would not only encourage more involvement from the surrounding community, but also heighten people’s awareness of sustainable and socially responsible duds.

“I feel as a society we often are wasteful with valuable things and I think that perspective has enhanced my passion for sustainable fashion and design,” says owner Justin Warwick. “I believe there’s a way to look hot, unique, even extraordinary from something that already exists, is recycled and fabulous.”

Participating vendors this month include sustainable floral artist Chandra Abel Designs, designers Docs Pop, Button Muse, Nooworks and Joanna Oster. Plus, local eco graphic artists Colleen Corcoran and Joseph Prichard will be displaying and selling selections from their art collection.

“We as an American society are finally considering ways that as individuals we can have sustainable lifestyles,” says Warwick. “Including fashion into that environmental movement is fantastic, but more importantly supports a global issue. Eco in the Echo is all about recognizing that.”

And be sure to join Warwick and friends every third Wednesday of the month for Hospitality Night, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Fluctuation in styles and body size mandates the exchange of old clothes for different ones, and for L.A.’s 9 million inhabitants, this is a closet-cluttering process. So what do we do to make way for the new: throw away our used clothes? NO! We first try and pass them off to friends and/or family members, and if that doesn’t work we can find our clothes new homes at consignment and/or second-hand stores-and what a way to save some money buying “new” clothes for ourselves, too!

There are so many reasons to steer clear of buying new clothes. The fashion industry is riddled with inhumane work conditions and wasteful practices. Sweatshops hire young children to work in unsafe environments for a penny’s wage, and in the U.S., clothing is filling up our landfills by the ton. The EPA states: “An estimated 11.9 million tons of textiles were generated in 2007, or 4.7 percent of total municipal solid waste (MSW) generation.”

Here is a list of some local shops that add a bit of green and/or affordable flair during these financially hard times in which we are holding ourselves a bit more responsible for how the world treats the land and the people.

Jet Rag’s Dollar Sale happens every Sunday starting at 9:00 a.m. Each piece-jeans, lingerie, kid’s clothes, belts, dresses, everything- strewn out across their driveway costs only $1 and they’re cash only so raid the piggy bank the night before. It’s a bit of a zoo, and requires pile climbing and searching, but it sure is fun to find a vintage dress for a buck!

At Buffalo Exchange, if you don’t need a satchel to carry your goodies home in, they hand you a “token” which you place into a number of different charity bins. For each token in the bins, Buffalo will donate 5 cents to that charity. Also, between now and Earth Day (April 22, 2009), bring in your real fur items, even if they’re in bad condition and Buffalo Exchange will donate them to Coats for Cubs, a Humane Society of the United States nonprofit that is seeing to it that orphaned and injured wildlife around the country have comfortable and warm bedding.

Every year, there is a huge children’s items (clothing and gear) sale in Van Nuys, called LA Kids Consignment. Their tagline says it all, “Kids are expensive! Their stuff doesn’t have to be!” This year’s spring sale is from Friday March, 27th from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm in Van Nuys and volunteers for the sale get to shop before the public.

Clothes are just as eligible to be reused and recycled as a plastic bottle or cardboard box, so head down to any of these locations for fashion that’s stylish, affordable, and it’s rejuvenation is part of the big-picture solution.
