Following World Oceans Day in June, YDT was invited to paddle out with the Santa Monica Baykeeper (SMBK), an environmental non-profit dedicated to marine protection in all of Los Angeles County. SMBK is helping shape California as a front-line leader in ocean protection as it works to guard and restore coastal habitat–abating urban runoff and sewage spills, keeping drinking water up to par, and studying kelp forests in the Baykeeper’s Kelp Restoration and Monitoring Project.

Of their latest endeavors is promoting the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA), “California’s landmark ocean protection law” that enables networks of marine protected areas (MPAs) to be created along California’s coast–and those networks are currently being decided. Working as underwater parks where fishing is prohibited, MPAs provide copious oceanic benefits: marine ecosystems where sea life can thrive with minimal human interference (scientists have shown that MPAs rebuild fish populations and restore ocean habitats) plus offering great wildlife-watching and diving. Thus far, SMBK has helped reverse the loss of 80 percent of the kelp forests in Southern California, including over 8.5 acres off Malibu and Palos Verdes through the SMBK kelp restoration project.

Joined by SMBK Marine Programs Manager Brian Meux and Media Relations Coordinator Kristy Pyke, I traveled on the Baykeeper boat to Malibu to talk with professional surfers paddling out that day, Jodie Nelson and James Pribram and representatives from Heal the Bay, Surfrider and Below the Surface. The aquatic act was to promote protection of the areas around Zuma Beach to Point Dume—proposed MPAs.

“MPAs are an incredible asset to not only our marine ecosystems … but our benefit as well,” says Pyke. “It’s important that we hold MPAs at a high priority and encourage the government to do the same.”

Sarah Abramson Sikich, Coastal Resource Director for Heal the Bay and four-year volunteer with Surfrider, was on her third paddle out. “It’s always a surprise to see how much isn’t protected,” says the marine biologist. “It’s critical that we protect something like 70 percent of the Earth.” She continues, “Oceans are overfished and big fish are gone. From a science and environmental standpoint, MPAs definitely make sense and are necessary.”

Mid-conversation with Jared Criscuolo, cofounder of Below the Surface, a purple jellyfish floated directly beneath Criscuolo’s surfboard (luckily all his limbs were above the surface). “It’s visceral encouragement,” he says, noting the jellyfish as a sign to carry on. “Get involved, get educated and get to know your water sources— we all have to be a part of the solution.”

The one downside to our eco-inspiring trek was a run-in with something that has become an all too common occurrence: floating plastic debris. According to Meux, something seemingly innocuous like deflated balloons become constant threats in the sea for birds and marine life, which often mistake them for jellies, attempt to eat them and die. Still, with stewards of the oceans like SMBK, as well as activists, MPA networks clearly have a future here in Southern California.

Baykeeper is looking for volunteers and divers. Contact them at www.smbaykeeper.org.

We love it when people are up to something interesting and even more when they share it with the world. So here are five women doing something green in Los Angeles, and blogging about it.

Transportation:

On Snob on a Bus, Jacquelyn dishes about her experience as a self-described snob who never saw herself taking public transport but now is carless and a regular bus-rider. However, her posts don’t sound snobby to me—just honest. It’s a kind of journal, each entry starting out with what she’s wearing and the weather at her usual stop in front of the 711 convenience store. She then goes on to give an account of bus happenings once it pulls up—wishes and woes, wonderings and wins. Most engaging are her interactions with people—the guy who holds the bus for her, the funny exchange with the driver. It’s a wild ride.

Food:

We know Jessica from her work at Heal the Bay (and these recommendations on being an eco-dog owner), but now she’s got a new passion: Chew-Gooder. She confesses, “everything I grew up thinking about food and its heath implications, both towards my body and the planet, was wrong” (can I ever relate to that!). But now, living in L.A., land of agricultural plenty, she’s exploring what it means to do right by the world and yourself in what you choose to chew. She experimented with being vegan for a month, reported on the restaurant in Santa Monica serving endangered whale meat and shares recipes, local beers, and green food fare weekly.

Consumption:

You met Angela from My Year Without Spending in this YDT interview. And she’s still at it. After a year of The Compact, buying nothing new and instead bartering, buying used or foregoing purchases altogether, she’s extending her commitment to cut down on stuff into the future. She fesses up to her (very limited) food waste on Fridays, features other people’s Thrifty Threads secondhand clothing scores on Thursdays and takes baby steps toward a greener life all the time.

Fashion:

What do you get when you combine mad crafting skills and a fashion budget of 365 dollars for the whole year? New Dress a Day where Marisa takes a vintage find every day and makes it into something magical. (Needless to say she’s a big fan of Jet Rag’s Sunday sidewalk sales.) No new purchases necessary for her wardrobe! See what happens when you pay five bucks for fabric and sew your own purse for prom—you have a lifetime ahead of you to awe and inspire the rest of us to DIY our closets.

..

Activism:

Sara at The Daily Ocean is on a mission to do her part for cleaning our beaches of debris, one day at a time. You don’t have to make cleaning up your community (and hers is Santa Monica) official. She told Green LA Girl: “Who needs an organized cleanup? Just grab a bag, go to the damn beach, and pick some stuff up.” And that’s what she does, for twenty minutes everyday. She’s collected over 400 pounds so far this year! And it’s amazing what she finds on those daily rites: toothbrushes, beer cans, straws, fast food packaging, flip flops. lighters, makeup…the works.

…….

Inspired? I know I am.

….

Yes, we all hate happening on a pile of it on our neighborhood walks, but it’s more than unsightly, it’s bad for people and the planet. I went to Jessica Belsky, Heal the Bay’s Communications Manager, for the full scoop.

I think we all know what not to do with dog waste–leave it on the street or in grassy areas. So, why not? What’s the problem with that and how does it specifically affect our waterways?

Well, aside from the obvious — someone might step in it, there are water quality problems associated with not picking up the doo. Pet waste contains a lot of bacteria. During a rainstorm, all of that un-picked-up poo and its associated bacteria, heads with the rain water directly down a storm drain, you know, those drains on the street curbs. These drains don’t end in any kind of treatment plant, they lead to the ocean or to another body of water (which in turn leads to the ocean). So, unless you want to swim with the poo, pick it up! It doesn’t necessarily take a rainstorm either. Think about your neighbor hosing off his driveway or someone watering her lawn. If the doggy pile gets left on the ground, it’s eventually swimming. It’s not just gross, it can also make you sick. Skin rashes, upper respiratory infections, flu like symptoms and GI problems-all possible side effects from swimming in bacteria-laden water. That’s not a nice way to end your weekend at the beach.

What’s the difference between animals leaving their excrement, say on the forest floor, and dogs leaving theirs in the city?

The number of dogs in our concentrated area is huge. For example, Los Angeles County has over 12 million people. Think, if only a quarter of those people have a dog as a pet, that’s over 3 million dogs. There are not that many natural large mammals living in Los Angeles County collectively (deer, mountain lions, bears, etc). Additionally, think of all of the pavement in the city. Cement leaves nowhere for the waste to go but eventually down the storm drain.

What’s the scoop on what dog owners and dog walkers should do with dog poop in Los Angeles? What’s the best thing to do? Is there a runner up best thing to do?

This is a tough question. Picking up the poo is most important. From there, you have a few options. You can use a plastic bag and throw it in the trash can. Many people reuse small bags, such as from a newspaper or even a produce bag. It’s really easy to bring a bag these days, a bag container can link right on to your dog’s leash. There are actually a few alternatives to plastic bags as well. I have seen dog waste “boxes” made of cardboard that will break down once in a landfill. I have some friends with small dogs that actually flush the poo down the toilet in some TP or in specially made septic safe doggie flush bags. However, this comes with its own problems in an area like L.A. where water is in shorter supply. Burying the poo, say in your garden for example (but away from food crops), is another option. Google “dog poop composting.” People really do it. Basically, the closer you can get the doo disposal to its origins, the more environmental it will be.

Any other tips for pet owners doing our part to help clean up the ocean in our own backyards?

Having a dog as a pet is very rewarding but also comes with a lot of responsibility.

In addition to knowing the scoop on all things dog, Heal the Bay is doing important work for the ocean. If you’re heading to the beach this weekend, check out its Beach Report Card before you dive in. And find out other ways to get your feet wet volunteering.

Jessica Belsky grew up surfing in and around Daytona Beach, FL. After earning her degree in English from the University of Miami, her life-long interest in ocean conservation and eco-issues led her to Los Angeles where she quickly became an avid volunteer with Heal the Bay’s Speaker’s Bureau program. Jessica is now Heal the Bay’s Communications Manager. She still enjoys volunteering in her free time at a bevy of both environmental and animal rescue events. A “pound puppy” advocate since a teenager, in addition to volunteering, Jessica frequently fosters shelter dogs in her apartment and owns a rescued stray hound mix, Bosco, who now lives (very well) with her family in Florida.

So it seems that the green movement is making its way down to our neighbors in the south as today the Ecology Center is kicking off its summer series aimed at fostering dialogue on the most pressing issues of the day. “The purpose of the series is to provide a foundation for making decisions that have a positive ecological impact. To that end, we are providing a forum where the residents of Orange County can explore these crucial topics with cutting-edge thinkers from a variety of backgrounds.” Tonight the discussion will be around one of our most basic needs: food, with Michael Besançon of Whole Foods Market leading the discussion. There will be light food, beer and wine to entertain throughout the conversation.

If you didn’t get your fill of food/animal related documentaries last week with Food INC, the The End of the Line might be right up your alley. The film touches on the major problems going on in the world’s oceans from overfishing to overpolluting. The filmmakers have even created a handy “What kind of fish can I eat widget” to help you figure out which fish are most sustainable. Personally I’ve almost decided to forgo all fish due to these issues (with the exception of WILD salmon from Alaska and the occasional yellow tail sushi I adore). The film premieres on Friday at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

The Los Angeles Film Festival begins this week and with it comes not only great independent films, but also inspiring environmental one. What’s on the ydt radar: Pick 1: This Saturday the Swedish film “Bananas” which chronicles the case of Nicaraguan banana laborers who claim to have been poisoned by pesticides. Upon completion of filming, new case elements arose and the issue of what happens when a story continues to evolve is covered in the film as well.

It’s important to remember why we get this day off. Our next president has called for a “Day of Service” on January 19th, the day before the inauguration and the day that we honor the work and memory of Martin Luther King. This past year we all seemed to demand one common thing: change. Change of the way our government works, change of the way that business works, change of the way we treat people and our environment. What ever you want to change, take this day to make that happen.

With the way the economy is looking these days, no one really wants to think about buying gifts. However, the holidays are just around the corner; so instead of buying an over priced t-shirt, why not get creative and check out the gifts at the Crazy Cool Ridiculous Holiday Bazaar. Check out eco-minded gifts from ydt favorite Green and Greener, Fair Trade Skin Care Products from Anti Body, Vegan Chocolate by Chocaveda and a lot more. You’ll get unique gifts and be stimulating our local economy too (Uncle Sam Will be Proud).

The Machine Project will be orchestrating 10 hours of workshops, performances, and events that will experiment “with LACMA’s encyclopedic collection and expansive grounds”. Exhibits include a glow in the dark unicorn, a man in a suit made of pepper cans, elevators inhabited by musicians (including a mariachi band and drum core) and more. My personal favorites, a tie between solving the interactive murder mystery with clues from the museum’s grounds and the gallery massages. This unique event is only taking place this Saturday. Definitely don’t miss out!
