Join the more than one billion people in 190 countries that are taking action for Earth Day with some of our (eco) friendly tips and reminders:

  • Go Veg!  Say “Thanks, but no thanks,” to meat.
  • Ride your bike whenever you can and save money and gas and get some exercise in too!
  • Swap out as many bulbs as possible with energy efficient CFL’s (compact fluorescent light bulbs).
  • Turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth and scrubbing your face.
  • Be sure to always have a reusable water bottle on hand.
  • Disconnect electronic items when not in use. It might sound like a pain, but there are great power strips, like the Smart Strip or DSI Green Power Strip, which has one main source so all you have to do is flip one switch and the job has been done for you.
  • Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible and use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying.
  • Be more cognizant of what you are throwing in the trash. Make sorting bins if you don’t already have them. Take batteries and electronics to the proper disposal facilities.

Earth Day on the Promenade

Sixty eco-exhibits, forty years of celebrating Earth Day, unlimited free refills of filtered water (if you bring a reusable bottle), and a partridge in a pear tree. Well, there may not be a partridge or a pear tree, but there will certainly be lots of eco-friendly fun at this year’s Earth Day on the Promenade. Stop by this “carbon neutral” eco-fest and check out the bamboo, hemp, organic cotton & coconut clothing displays; listen to live musical performances; learn about new health and wellness practices; taste organic “treats” and tons more.  Why? Earth Day only comes around once a year, so we’re looking forward to a jolly good time!

It’s lurking in your bedroom, it’s waiting for you in your bathroom, it’s even in your kitchen cabinets. What is it? Plastic! It’s Hammer Time

Break away from your usual Friday night routine and bike over to the Hammer Museum in Westwood for “Bike Night at the Hammer.”  See a film screening of Breaking Away – the story of “Dave,” a nineteen year-old bicycling enthusiast, and his three friends, who have all just graduated from high school and are not sure what they want to do with their lives. Meanwhile, snack on “vegetarian delights”, accompanied by drinks from the museum’s cash bar. Enjoy free admission as well as complimentary bicycle valet service. Why? The week is over and it’s time to shift gears and enjoy the weekend.

Walk the Distance

Every day, women and girls in developing countries must walk an average of 3.7 miles (equivalent to a 6K marathon) to get fresh drinking water. That is why Dow & Live Earth ask that you join them in their Dow Live Earth Run For Water Los Angeles to help raise awareness of the global shortage of clean, safe drinking water.  After the 6K run/walk there will be a concert as well as a “Water Village” with exhibits, vendors and “educations.” Proceeds will go to Global Water Challenge, “a coalition of nonprofit organizations working to bring clean, safe drinking water to millions.” Why? It’s time to walk a mile (or 3.7 miles) in someone else’s shoes.
