Free Salad For One and All

Recently opened Salad Bowl Cafe is letting you have your salad and eat it too, and all for free. From 6 to 8 p.m. for the rest of the week, new customers can come in a get a free salad. The options are endless…literally more than hundreds of ingredients to choose from. Why? There’s no such thing as a free lunch, but for this week there is a free dinner.

Moon Shine

The Moon Festival is happening this weekend and there is no better place to celebrate it than in Chinatown. Honoring the change of season this festival will feature offerings from the LA Craft Experience, Chinese acrobatics, a ping pong tournament, yummy food, good prosperity and KCRW djs will be rocking the night away. Why? Prosperity comes to those that attend.

Just GLOW

Prepare for an all-nighter as Glow returns and turns Santa Monica Pier and Palisades park into an all night art gallery. There will be 20 unique temporary art installations ranging from music to technology and everything imaginable in between. Be sure to look out for what the Machine Project has up its sleeve. Head to the carousel…that’s all I’m saying. Why? Glowing does a body and mind good.

Abbot’s a Habit

It’s back, the 26th annual Abbot Kinney Festival is here at last. The street will be packed with locals selling unique finds, fun stuff for the kiddos, a beer garden for the grown ups, live music, a Whole Foods green scene and of course food trucks. Foodies will be glad to know that this year’s festival will feature demos and displays by local chefs and artisans. Get their via bicycle as free bike valet is provided Why? Isn’t it time you cleaned up your habit?

Test Kitchen Fires Up

L.A.’s newest food destination, is also the most innovative. Test Kitchen launched this month showcasing rotating chefs and menus nightly. Sustainable supper club favorites the Chicks with Knives will be hosting a 7 course seasonal/locally sourced meal on Thursday September 30th for $60 per person. If you haven’t check out the Chicks or Test Kitchen, this is the opportunity to do so. Why? Good things come and go.

Abbot Kinney Festival Food

We know that undeniably, the best part of every festival is the refreshments, so we thought we’d mention the tasty items that will be available at the Green Lifestyle section of the Abbot Kinney Festival this Sunday, September 28th, 2008.

Food and beverage sponsors this Sunday will include environmentally-friendly Green Truck, Clif Bar, and Bossa Wine Imports. The libations will be available in the festival’s VIP area (invite only).

For those of you who haven’t heard about Green Truck before, check out our recent ydt post about them below by Green Living Contributor Danielle Davis.

Green Truck is a dream come true for health and planet nuts whodon’t have the time to prepare their own sustainable, gourmet brown bags. It orders up the best qualities of lunch trucks – their convenience and mobility for working people who want to eat – and adds pounds of green principles, hold the carbon.

Green Truck run on used vegetable oil (yes, your conscience can always use this as a good excuse to eat French fries), cook with organic, locally sourced ingredients, serve on compostable plates and have a home base kitchen whose fridge and other appliances are powered by solar panels.

This food truck has both staples taken to a new level along with unusual offerings that will please every palate. You can order a breakfast burrito wrapped in a flourless sprouted tortilla. (Don’t worry, all the regular fixins-bacon, cheese, egg-are inside.) You can chow down on a grass-fed beef hamburger or dog with herbed sweet potato fries. For the meat-free folks, the sesame tofu wrap. For light-lunchers, yes, this truck even has seasonal salads.

With two trucks (and more on the way), Green Truck is available for regular stops at offices, construction sites, and commercial shoots, for local delivering or for catering fancy parties. Ian Shive Photography: An Eye for Beauty, An Ear for the Call of the Wild

How can you care about happenings in places you’ve never seen? The reason polar bears are so captivating in the public’s global warming imagination is that though many of us have never seen one in its natural environment, after one glimpse of a white furry giant lollygagging around the ice on camera, how could we not care that melting habitat is threatening their very existence?

A whole group of nature and outdoor photographers who are part of the International League of Conservation Photographers believe capturing scenes like that on camera are key to raising planetary awareness. “Awe-inspiring photography is a powerful force,” helping “replace environmental indifference with a new culture of stewardship and passion for our beautiful planet.”

Just think, Yellowstone, the first national park in the world was created thanks in large part to the watercolors of Thomas Moran.

Ian Shive of Los Angeles is one such conservation photographer, but he didn’t start out that way. He was just the son of a classic rock band lensman who, even after swearing off the family practice, couldn’t help snapping the world around him when faced with the unfamiliar beauty of Montana’s landscape while in college there.

What was first a personal experience, taking meaningful pictures of the great outdoors, became something Shive wanted to share. And upon sharing it, he realized his work’s potential for connecting viewers to the wider world and to the way we are all indeed connected to that world, whether it’s the grandest sweeping valley, the tiniest droplets on a spider web or the funkiest jelly-like creature under the sea .

Action Sports Environmental Coalition

One thing ydt has tried to share this past year is that “greenies” are no longer the tree hugging, sans deodorant wearing, long haired hippies of generations past. The Green Movement has expanded across all borders–social, political, economic and now, action sports.

You heard me, the athletes of the X games: skate boarders, bmx riders, surfers, snow boarders and more have come together to form the Action Sports Environmental Coalition (ASEC). The ASEC members connect through their shared appreciation of the Earth, their outdoor playground.

According to their motto, “We’ve all come together to improve our collective environmental impact and to find better ways of educating the world about the dangers of global warming and the need for social responsibility.”

.1 To them, much like their action sports, environmental awareness is not a just cool trend, but a movement to be part of and contribute to. As they like to say, “Vive la Resolution.”

This weekend they will be at the Green Lifestyle Section of the Abbot Kinney Festival. Boise Thomas of Alter Eco will be there demonstrating the sport of bicycle polo and original Dogtown Z-Boy Ray Flores will also be there to support the cause.

Want to be active at the festival? Take public transportation or ride your bike and park it free at the bicycle valet. Feel like dancing? DJs will be spinning throughout the day, so if you didn’t get to dance Friday or Saturday night, you can definitely shake it on Sunday..

Pink Cloud Events

Sarah Shewey of Pink Cloud Events is a force to be reckoned with. As a passionate entrepreneur, Sarah knew early on that she wanted to run her own event planning business.

She quickly learned that in order to produce high quality events, she needed to master three things: location, vision/audio, and food. Upon graduation (from USC) she moved across the country to Boston, across the Atlantic to Barcelona and back to sunny Los Angeles to learn how to best bring all three elements together. Feeling a lack of creativity in both the corporate and non-profit world, Sarah was inspired to create Pink Cloud Events, where she could bring together happenings and artistic creativity, all the while minimizing the impact and waste of large events on the environment at the same time.

How does she do it? Pink Cloud Events works with artists on creating the messaging and look of an event space. Pieces created for the moment can be preserved after the event and are often purchased as art, so the life of the product continues after the initial use. Organic and local food, wine, drinks and

spirits are always used first whenever possible, as are biodegradable plastic products.

This year alone she’s sponsored the Tonalism display by Dublab at the Glow Festival on the Santa Monica Pier, produced the grand opening of Clout Malibu Surf Shop, and the first Eco Luxe Bridal Salon at eco chic boutique Avita Co-op. If you haven’t had a chance to check these events out you’re in luck: Sarah has been commissioned to produce “Connected,” the Green Lifestyle area at the 24th annual Abbot Kinney Festival, “Venice’s ultimate block party,” September 28th. In keeping with her mantra, “Connected” is taking the focus from products to people, and focusing on how “we can all connect to ourselves, our community and our environment partying all the while”.
