…….

Los Angeles California, (May 1, 2009) Your Daily Thread, L.A.’s hub for all things green, sustainable and local has partnered with Chelsea Green, the preeminent publisher of books on sustainable living, to answer: What’s the beef with meat?  “Most people are unaware of the substantial environmental impact that comes from eating factory-farmed meat, so we wanted to shed some light to this issue,” says Tracy Hepler, Co-Founder of Your Daily Thread.   Web Editor of Chelsea Green Jesse McDougall agrees, “We’ve decided to put our veggies where our mouth is and cut meat out of our collective diet for the month of May.”  By cutting meat out of their meals for one month, each participant will keep 420 lbs of CO2 out of the atmosphere.   That is the equivalent of not using a car for over two weeks!

The startling facts about meat production are what prompted this

campaign:

•    Meat production (raising of livestock) accounts for 18% of global green house gasses, more than that of all of the world’scars and SUVS. (http://www.fao.org/ag/magazine/0612sp1.htm)

•    Cutting meat from your diet keeps 5,000 pounds of CO2 emissions out of the atmosphere per year. (http://planetgreen.discovery.com/home-garden/reduce-carbon-emissions-investments.html)

•    Animal agriculture uses 1/3 of all the fossil fuel energy in the United States.(http://vegetarian.about.com/od/vegetarianvegan101/f/fossilfuels.htm)

•    80% of the grain grown in the U.S. is used for cattle feed. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_effects_of_meat_production)

Your Daily Thread and Chelsea Green are encouraging individuals to go online to take the pledge to go without meat this month.  Find the pledge on the  “Meatless in May” Facebook page.

Editorial content, tips on eating vegetarian, recipes, giveaways and debates will be taking place all month long on Your Daily Thread and Chelsea Green to coincide with the campaign.
