Who Needs A Yard?

A DIY indoor herb garden perfect for the apartment-bound.

Attention all apartment dwellers! Beautify your indoor space with a simple, do-it-yourself, organic herb garden. By choosing easy-to-grow herbs, the right soil mixture, and a sunny spot near a window, even those with a not-so-green thumb can make a mini garden thrive. Many herbs are natural health remedies and just a sprinkle makes an average dinner divine.

Your Checklist:

  • A large pot with a hole for drainage and a tray underneath—a 13- 15″ container can hold four grown plants. (We love Green Pots from Ecosource—compostable pots made from rice hulls.)
  • Stones or gravel (just enough for the bottom of the pot to promote drainage).
  • Seeds such as basil, mint, thyme, oregano, sage, parsley, chives, rosemary (pick your favorites!).
  • Organic potting mix.

Get Started:

  1. Place the seeds about a ¼ – ½” deep and cover loosely with soil.
  2. Water the plants regularly so the soil stays moist.
  3. Find a sunny spot. Lush herbs love at least four to five hours of direct sunlight daily.
  4. Be patient. Some herbs may take up to 8-10 weeks to peek through.

Your Daily Thread Tips: Remember to cut leaves and stems from the top first rather than the sides. Add a burst of fresh flavor to omelets, salads, marinades, and pastas by cutting up fresh herbs right before using. Blend up your own homemade organic basil pesto. Add a sprig of mint to your afternoon tea. Enjoy watching your little garden grow!
