A non-vegan declares: Feed me vegan, gluten and sugar-free sweets!
With well-known yummy snacks like Uncle Eddie’s Vegan cookies, many of us non-vegans have come to appreciate and even love baked goods made without any animal products.
With my enlightened mind, I went in to get the skinny on the NYC based Baby Cakes Bakery. Along with being vegan, it specializes in gluten and sugar free items and uses organic ingredients and has enjoyed a new home in L.A. since January, in a fun section of downtown on 6th Street, close to hotspots like Cole’s and Varnish and is walking distance from YDT’s favorite Design it Yourself Shop Apliiq.
So what was the verdict? We break it down in Sprinkles
Cupcakes: 3 1/2 out of 5 sprinkles
Very pretty to look at. The cake is moist; the frosting definitely seals the deal. Honestly, you can’t really tell that they’re vegan, they’re so decadent.
Brownies: 4 1/2 out of 5 Sprinkles
I had both the regular version and the agave sweetened one. I liked the regular one better, even though I’m typically into agave. The bite-size pop-ability of these chocolate treats makes them a bit dangerous.
Doughnuts: 2 out of 4 Sprinkles
Not quite the traditional fried favorite, these rings seemed more cake like to me. The cinnamon glaze was yummy, but a little too sweet for me. Overall they we’re probably my least favorite on account of being a tad on the dry side.
Cookie Sandwich: 5 out of 5 Sprinkles
The shining star of Baby Cakes to me is the chocolate chip cookie sandwich. Picture two yummy chocolate chip cookies with cupcake frosting in the middle. It’s a moon pie made in vegan heaven.
The final say: When in Downtown and craving sweets, I’ll definitely swing by again.
