La Guera Tamalera

La Guera Tamalera

They Go Together Like…Coffee and Tamales?

She’s got taste, she’s got a steamer, and honey, can she cook an organic tamale! Of course we’re talking about La Guera Tamalera, the self proclaimed “White-Girl Tamale Maker.” She will set up shop at Cafecito Organico (an organic coffee shop in Silver Lake, which features shade-grown, locally roasted, fair trade coffee from Latin America) between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for the remaining Saturdays of the month. Why? An unlikely coupling makes for one tasty meal.

Location: 534 N. Hoover St., Silver Lake, CA 90026 Date/Time: Saturday, June 19 and Saturday, June 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Web: http://www.cafecitoorganico.com/.

A Perfect Pairing

A glass of Merlot paired with an appetizer at Green Wave’s wine tasting in Santa Monica will benefit its eco-scholarship programs in Costa Rica. A glass of Pinot Grigio will support a children’s sanctuary in Kenya. A final glass of Sauvignon Blanc will probably leave you a little giddy, especially when you sober up to realize that glass of wine just helped the “Save an Acre” Campaign, another of Green Wave’s environmental initiatives. Why? Smell, sniff, swirl, sip and repeat.

Location: Pourtal Wine Tasting Bar , 104 Santa Monica Blvd, CA Santa Monica, CA 90401 (map) Date/Time: June 17–30, Monday thru Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.  Cost: $5 Glasses, $4 Appetizers & 15% of all Tasting Sales to Charity Web: http://www.inspiringwavesofchange.org/.

We’ll Swap You

It was a springtime splurge that left you with buyer’s remorse and a receipt that specifically stated “no returns” (sigh). Now, what to do with your unworn, but still in great shape (and style) clothing? Bring it to the Frugal Festival Summer Swap in North Hollywood this Saturday. Why? Turn in those “so cute, but just don’t fit right” duds for outfits you will wear and love all summer long (and hopefully a lot longer).

Location: NoHo Performing Arts Center, 11020 Magnolia Blvd, North Hollywood, CA 91601 Date/Time: Saturday, June 19 from 1 to 3p.m.  Cost: $5-$10  Web: http://frugalfestival.wordpress.com/.

It’s All About Dad

Change things up a bit this Father’s Day and head to the Aquarium of the Pacific for its Father’s Day Picnic. Trade in watching a movie of Uncle John’s shoulder surgery (again) for a picnic overlooking Rainbow Harbor including “Grilled to Perfection” Sustainable Cajun Salmon. Why? Mention the Granny Smith Apple, Peach or Cherry Cobblers, served with Vanilla Ice Cream, and we’re pretty sure your day at the aquarium with Dad is a done deal.

Location: Aquarium of the Pacific, 100 Aquarium Way, Long Beach, CA 90802 (Directions) Date/Time: Sunday, June 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Cost: Adults: $34; Kids 3-11: $27. Prices include admission to the Aquarium  Web: http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/newsevents/eventsdetail/fathers_day/.
