Green & Good
So we’ve finally realized that fish in the sea are not an inexhaustible resource. One only needs to watch The End of the Line to realize how many threatened fish species are in decline. And celebrities chefs like Jamie Oliver are really putting their knives down when it comes to serving up endangered fish like bluefin tuna, but there are many more fish that also need our support.
As concerned consumers, we carry our Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch pocket guide of recommended seafood, but it can be confusing to know if what we order is really from a sustainable source. Even if you ask the server at a restaurant whether the rockfish is from a healthy West coast fishery or a fishery that uses irresponsible bottom trawl gear, fairly enough, it often bewilders them completely.
Luckily, a new program called Seafood For the Future (SFF) started by the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific (LBAOP) in 2008 is doing all the work for you. It is endorsing local Southern California restaurants whose chefs engage in learning more about and serving sustainable seafood.
Even better: walk into one of the Seafood For the Future-endorsed restaurants, order a recommended entrée and you’ll receive a free ticket to the Long Beach Aquarium!
A few participating L.A. eateries with eco-catches on their menus include: Village Idiot, Providence, Lucques, Pace Restaurant, Nook Bistro , and Eco Caters.
