USC’s Fight Against Coal With Help From The Sierra Club
It seems that colleges are the new center stage for the fight against Coal Fired Power Plants. YDT was informed by a USC student and activist that USC is one of 60 college campus nation wide that are transition from dirty coal power to renewable energy during the Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign. Currently all of Los Angeles gets 44% of it’s energy from imported coal and USC wants to be a leader in changing that. The campaign will take place throughout the fall with students hosting coal-less coalition BBQs and other events to show their commitment to the issue. You can watch and informative video from the Sierra Club on the issues and check out a write up about the students from the NYTimes Greenwire.

The impact section will cover different aspects of impact–social good, humantarian issues, environmental issues–anywhere you can make an impact will be fair game. In addition to the new section, No Impact Week has launched on the Huff Post. Even though it has already started you can still join in–and keep up with the 4000 others who have decided to create no impact for one week. Our co-founder Tracy has signed up, though she knows she’s going to be breaking the transportation rule sometime this weekVote the City of Irvine For the Recycler Award
YDT’s wonderful intern Pooja is also an employee of the City of Irvine Environmental Programs Division and currently participating in the “Cash for Cans” contest against other cities to see who has created the best video to share the importance of recycling and everyone to do it. You can watch the video here and place your vote for Irvine (it’s the most local city involved in the content, so show your home town support.)
