Bikes. They’re clean, green and good exercise. In lieu of the cycle’s increasing appeal, Paris is slowly perfecting a public bike sharing system called the Vélib’ System, in which people can rent a public bike all day for about a Euro. People can pick up and drop off their bike at any of the self-sufficient and solar-powered bike stations located throughout the city. Similar bike sharing systems have already been set up in Washington DC and Montreal, and plans are underway for Boston and London. As bike sharing cities create innovative solutions for theft and vandalism issues, the program becomes an even more appealing option for all major cities. As Yuka Yoneda puts in in this Inhabitat article, outside observations of cities with bike sharing often “yield wide-eyed ‘Why doesn’t my city do this?’ reactions.” What a good question!
