Gourmet Mushroom Taste
October 1, 2009 Written by Tracy Hepler
No we’re not talking about “fun” mushroom–we’re talking gourmet, specially grown wild varietals that not only taste great, but carry a plethora of
health benefits too. YDT was fortunate enough to get an invite from
City Search and
Veggie Thing to the
Desert Rose restaurant in Los Feliz for a mushroom tasting courtsey of
Hokto Kinoko. Hokto Kinoko grows wild varietal mushrooms in a facility south of Los Angeles.
Hokto Kinoko mushrooms are cultivated from organic culture media (what the mushroom grows in) and are never treated with chemicals or additives. The company also makes an effort to reduce and minimize waste from the packaging.
We got to sample their delicious Maitake, Brown Beech, White Beech and King Trumpets mushrooms in a variety of different preparations. Even our co-founder Lauren who usually hates mushrooms was pleasantly surprised. While there was definitely a middle eastern flare (as Desert Rose is a Lebanesse restaurant), we got to sample some pretty unique preparations–including our favorite which was a mushroom Gruyere flan (which was the one non-vegan thing on the menu). We took a few of our own photos, but you can see alot more event photos here courtsey of Sarah M Golonka .
