I often give my own art pieces, local art or handmade/indie company's items as gifts and I eat only vegetables and food I get from the local farmer's market . The farmer's market is a great way to feel a bit of community in a very separatist city. I cook for my neighbors and we have lots of communal meals. In the end, we all save money plus enrich each others lives by being generous and spending time together. Now each purchase I make is thoughtful and not compulsive and in the end I treasure everything I own and give to others. It has been a great gift. I am much more healthier and very happy! I am now able to walk to and from work, rather than sitting in LA traffic contributing to so many environmental problems. Not only is it totally eco-friendly, it's been a great way to get to know my community better. I installed a low flow shower head, and have been turning the water off when I shave my legs. It saves a lot of water and I have gotten really efficient with my shaving routine!
