That’s why it’s great to see a line that not only brings eco-principles into their design, but also is made and manufactured safely and fairly in the USA.
Alex and Ani is a jewelry lined based out of the New York area that focuses on using recycled metals to create beautiful pieces that are not only stylish but carry an environmental message. The company uses over 50% post consumer waste and zero toxic materials in their production. They also purchase from local metal supplies to minimize fuel consumption from the transportation process.

Alex and Ani have also been kind enough to share SEVEN bangles for lucky YDT readers to win. Simply tell us one green commitment you have made this past year in the comments to be entered.

Wow these are amazing jewelry pieces!
My Green commitment:
I used only water to grow my basil and cilantro plants, no chemicals were used. Once a week I sprayed the leaves with a mix of water and vinegar to remove the little bugs and it worked very well. My basil taste so much better knowing it is 100% natural!

When I need to satisfy my java fix (practically daily), I bring a stainless steel mug to Peets Coffee. They take 10cents off your purchase to incentivize customers to stop using plastic & paper cups.
I also “if it’s yellow let it mellow” more often to conserve water thanks to an earlier YDT post! Cheers!

Beautiful jewelry !
My Green Commitments: This year I have begun using totes to carry groceries, my lunch, my laptop, workout clothes, etc etc etc. to eliminate using disposables. I stopped purchasing bottled water and bought some neat SIG and other drink canisters. This impacts my home but I also take them to work to avoid the use of styrofoam cups there. I am bombarding my friends and family with e-mails about Green living and helpful hints to make changes. I sold my SUV and bought a small car and carpool anyway as often as possible. And in general I have been educating myself about eco friendly businesses and their products and have subscribed to websites like YDT to keep informed and involved. AND, I would love to wear the bracelets as another part of my continued growth towards Green living !!!

I walk to work and I bought a stainless steel water bottle so I could stop using the plastic bottled water.

Those bangles are great!
I have been bringing my own cups and coffee mugs to work to avoid using the plastic/paper ones. I also take my own bags to the grocery store.

1. I carry totes for all my shopping.
2. I compost.
3. My household went from a 2 car household to a 1 car household, and our 1 car is a hybrid.
4. I no longer buy bottled water.

My Green Commitment,
California is in the third year of one the worst water crisis in our history so this year my green commitment has been to:
1) use a bucket in my shower to collect the extra water, i then use it to flush the toilet
2) drink all the water served to me at restaurants and communicate clearly to restaurant staff when i don’t want/can’t drink more water so i don’t leave it wasted on the table
3) Installed low flow shower head and faucet aerators
4) only let the water run to the width of a pencil for most of my dish washing needs, after all it’s the soap that does the cleaning (thanks Sustainable Works Green Living Workshop for that tip!)
5) Turn off the water when I brush my teeth and wash my face(ok, I have always done that so maybe that doesn’t count)

I bought a bike and have been riding around town instead of using my car all the time. Not only is it green but it is a lot of fun and great exercise as well.

I feel blessed to live where I can now bike to work/errands, join a coop and csa for our groceries and volunteer to support local growers and artisans. We have an annual Earth Day celebration that I’ll be volunteering at as well. GO GREEN!!!

Sitting in a hundred degree weather and watching my little garden wilt in the heat, I only realize the importance of water in a southern Cali more and more.
I installed a low flow shower head, and have been turning the water off when I shave my legs. It saves a lot of water and I have gotten really efficient with my shaving routine!

I have learned to cook which means I no longer buy packaged/frozen/premade items and only shop at the farmers market.
Jessica
I have always used a refillable water bottle, canvas grocery bags and grown my own veggies but I was tired of sitting on the freeway guzzling gas so I changed jobs! I am now able to walk to and from work, rather than sitting in LA traffic contributing to so many environmental problems. Not only is it totally eco-friendly, it’s been a great way to get to know my community better.

The biggest green commitment I’ve made is actually to consume less…. wayyyy less! And, I think one of the most important ones we can do!
Mary
The biggest green commitment I have made is to make sure I buy with more care. I often give my own art pieces, local art or handmade/indie company’s items as gifts and I eat only vegetables and food I get from the local farmer’s market . The farmer’s market is a great way to feel a bit of community in a very separatist city. I cook for my neighbors and we have lots of communal meals. In the end, we all save money plus enrich each others lives by being generous and spending time together. Now each purchase I make is thoughtful and not compulsive and in the end I treasure everything I own and give to others. It has been a great gift. I am much more healthier and very happy!

I’ll give you two–I bought a Brita water pitcher and a pretty stainless steel bowl for my shower that I use when I turn off the water to shave and need to rinse to rinse my razor. Prior to that I didn’t like turn off my water and it’s so easy and cheap to implement.
