Growing Power Through Urban Farms

Growing Power Through Urban Farms

The most impressive example you will find of inner-city farming is surely Growing Power, a booming urban farm founded by soil-aficionado Will Allen. Allen created Growing Power in the unlikeliest of locations, crammed in the middle of a working-class neighborhood in Milwaukee, near a public-housing project.

The densely packed farm provides locally grown food for over 10,000 people across the city, and employs members of the community, including people from the housing project. Growing Power not only rejuvenates northeast Milwaukee by creating jobs, access to healthier food, and agricultural empowerment, the local farm saves air and landfill space by composting over six million pounds of spoiled food a year for soil. Allen now trains others interested in urban and local farming, in the hopes agriculture will become a grassroots endeavor across America.
