Gills Onions has successfully grown and provided onions throughout California for over twenty years, but owner Steve Gill was interested in reducing the waste and emissions created by his company’s Oxnard plant.
Gill discovered a way to utilize the juice from the discarded portion of each onion, which is normally rather expensive and hazardous to dispose of, to create enough energy to power a significant part of his plant. Gill’s new sustainable system cuts his electricity bill by about $700,000 a year, and reduces his carbon-dioxide emissions by as much as 30,000 tons annually.
