Surf’s Up Project BLUE

surfing
Anyone who has surfed or knows a surfer is privy to the unspoken surfers’ code to care for and respect the ocean-after all it is the source of such amazing waves. Well now some of the biggest names in the surf industry (who are normally competitors) have partnered to create an initiative called project BLUE in support of the Surfrider Foundation. And it’s not charity–it’s a plan of action.

The goal of project BLUE is to create an easy way for surf and beach lovers to “plug in” to Surfrider’s mission of protecting the world’s waters. The companies involved include Billabong, DAKINE, Electric, Famous Wax, Nixon, O’Neill and Reef. Each company has created co-branded limited edition product lines that contribute $2 to Surfrider for every item that is sold (ala motto of Project (Red).) The website also offers different ways to get involved and tips on things we can all do to keep our oceans clean

and true to blue.

Not only are they contributing to a good cause but they’re using more eco-minded materials in the project BLUE lines including organic cotton, soy based inks, petro-chemical-free surf wax, Eco Supreme Suede (a product that has thus far kept 3 million plastic water bottles out of the landfills), recycled packaging and more.

With the U.S. Open of Surfing happening this week down in Huntington Beach, it’s the perfect time to get on board. Learn more about project BLUE at http://www.betruetoblue.com/

Sandra

I’m planning on attending the monthly beach clean ups organized from Heal the Bay. I’ve been meaning to do it for awhile, but haven’t made the commitment. I think keeping our oceans safe and clean is so important! We should all do more.

Ashley Zarella

I am committed to getting more storm drain covers in Downtown LA to prevent the waste and debris from our city streets from getting to our ocean and shores. I am dedicated to raising awareness about the link that few seem to make – our litter is dangerous to the ecology of our oceans!!

SURFINRON

I’VE BEEN DOIN’ THE BEACH CLEAN-UP FOR YEARS NOW. IT’S THE BEST THING TO DO. SINCE I SURF, IT’S ALWAYS GREAT TO SEE A CLEAN BEACH AND SOMETIMES CLEAN WATER. I’LL ALWAYS DO MY BEST TO KEEP OUR BEACHES CLEAN. I HOPE EVERYONE ELSE FEELS THE SAME WAY AS I FEEL. SO COME ON EVERYONE CLEAN UP OUR BEACHES

Erica

I work closely with environmental speakers who have already impacted the Earth with their contributions so that they can speak to our youth about environmental issues and how each one of them can help change the world and make it a better place :)

Karina

I attend the Beach clean ups organized by Surfrider Foundation and have requested for an activity at the Boys and Girls Club that I volunteer at that would help the kids become more aware of what they can to do help the environment. It only recently started but since i got the director into it, we’ve made shirts and when we go on beach trips, I make a point of having all the kids pick up 3 peices of trash they see.

I figure, they’re our future, and that means they’re the beach’s future too.

Beach clean up with surfrider foundation.

Esther

I bring a big black garbage bag after I go surfing and pick up all sorts of trash on the beach. People ask me what I am doing, I reply with, “Saving the world.” I am actively involved in Surfrider Foundation beach clean ups & I am volunteer at the Marine Mammal Center. I also preach to tourists on the beach that leave thier trash behind. Because picking up once piece of trash can save an ecosystem.
