The Winter Ball

Yes it’s finally here…no not Valentine’s Day, another national Holiday.  That means many of us get the day off of work and school, woohoo!  If you’ll be staying local here are some fun events that will suit you whether your celebrating Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day or all of the above.

MILK Does a Body Good, The Milk Trunk Show at Visionary Boutique

Is there anything eco designers won’t think of using?  Yes the title is correct, come see the Milk (white stuff from cows) fibers work in the delicious eco fashion of Casey Larkin line, Mr. Lakin at the Milk Trunk Show at Visionary Boutique in West Hollywood.  Most recently you can see her fashion gracing the cover of The New York Times on Anne Hathaway.  Visionary Boutique will be hosting with refreshment and killer deals on all of your favorite green products for your body and home.

Location: Visionary Boutique  8568 1/2 Melrose Ave  West Hollywood CA  90069
Date/Time:  TODAY, Thursday from 4-9p.m.  Web:  www.visionaryboutique.com

Green Peace is Having a House Party

Green Peace
is one of those organizations that have been around for as long as I can remember and apparently they still know how to party.  Come to their Los Feliz office tomorrow nights to mingle and drink with your fellow tree loving Angelenos who will be there to help build a local grassroots movement here in L.A.

Location: 1727 N Vermont Ave Suite 210 Los Angeles, CA 90027  Date/Time:  TODAY, February 12th at 6 p.m.  Web: http://members.greenpeace.org/event/view/3133/

FUEL, the Film opens up in La La Land

The Sundance award-winning documentary “Fuel” is finally opening in theatres in Los Angeles.  Unfortunately it will only be at two theaters (one in West Hollywood and the other in Santa Monica.)  Why so few?  Because distribution is a B@#%! and the money men need to know that the film will turn a profit if releases in theaters nationally (apparently winning at Sundance doesn’t earn the kind of confidence it use too.)  The film will only be open for this week starting on Friday, February 13th thru the 20th.  If FUEL can get 4,000 Angelenos to go see it during this time then the film will have a good chance of going nationally.

The Santa Monica theatre will be holding a promotion this Friday night for the first 100 cyclists who ride in from Palisades Park at the Santa Monica Pier.  They’re expecting a large group so to join in and support the film and see it for free RSVP events@thefuelfilm.com or Jon@thefuelfilm.com or 310.452.7731.
Location: Laemmle Sunset 5, 8000 Sunset Blvd.  Los Angeles, CA, 90046 and
AMC Loews Broadway 4, 1441 3rd Street Promenade Santa Monica, CA, 90401
Dates:  2/13-2/20  Times: TBA based on Theatre Schedule  Web: http://thefuelfilm.com/

Valentine’s Day…What to do?  Go to Downtown!

In trying to find one Valentine’s Day event to include in the weekend guide I came across a lot of Anti Valentine’s Day celebrations.  I guess I understand that, but you don’t need to be with a significant other.  Hang out with a friend or love yourself (check out our guide to spending v’day with your girl friends here.)

If you want to do something really fun, head downtown.  It seems that there are tons of different events taking place in the area this weekend.  Of course there is Lucent L’amour as Presented by The Do Lab and featured on ydt here.  But the other event that caught my

eye is the Winter Ball being hosted at the Alexandria Hotel.  It seems like a fun opportunity to break out your old prom dress (or channel your inner Shakespearean character.)  The dressing up isn’t just for ladies, men have to wear their finest tails, tuxes and top hats.  See you can relive your prom night again, and this time you don’t have to take Peach Schnapps with you to have fun.  The cost for the event (which includes an open bar is only $30 which is amazing for V’day on a weekend.)  And you will feel better while you’re there knowing that by attending this event you helped to support 826 LA. Check out their website for the full list of djs and music that will be performing.  It seems like it will be an all night affair…
Location: Alexandria Hotel, 501 South Spring Street Los Angeles, CA 90013   Date/Time:  Saturday, February 14, 9p.m. to 2 p.m.  Web/RSVP: http://www.thewinterball2009.eventbrite.com/

* On a side note, thanks to all of the people who came out to the screening of Made in L.A. last night, the movie was incredibly moving and it was wonderful to have one of the social activist involved in the film speak after the movie.  If you weren’t able to make it we have a few copies of the DVD for sale for $19.  You can buy them by contacting  10,000 Villages in Pasadena at (626) 229-9892.  All proceeds from the sale go towards the documentary film (it’s a PBS production.)
