- To stop writing notes on Post-its that inevitably get lost in the shuffle anyway and use one daily planner and stick to it. (She has tried doing away with paper all-together ala the Blackberry but realizes that paper planners are her guilty non-green pleasure. Here’s what she asked for this Christmas.
- To carry a reusable shopping bag with her everywhere. She’s got the supermarket thing down, but still finds herself bagless when window shopping turns into actual shopping.
- She knows not everyone is as lucky as she is to have a small goat farm and veggie garden, so Lauren wants to share her food goods with friends each time she comes to town. (Don’t you wish you were her friend?)
- To bike, bus, and walk more within a four to five mile round trip of her home.
- To educate herself on composting, apartment style.
- To limit impulse purchases.
- To commit to self education on ways to decrease her carbon foot print and live a more simple lifestyle.
- To use chemical-free/organic/and TRULY natural ingredients in all of her beauty products.
Connie, Food and Fashion Contributor:
- To avoid using disposable cups or silverware when possible.
- To refuse unneeded paper or plastic bags when shopping.
- To walk instead of drive because not only is it good for the environment, it’s good exercise-plus, it allows you to see your neighborhood from an entirely different perspective.
Danielle, Green Living Contributor:
- To resurrect her vermicomposting bin from the heap of soil and other stuff on her patio.
- To only buy clothing that is either sustainably made or from a bygone era (aka vintage/thrift).
- To remember to bring along a trash bag on her weekly walk to the farmers’ market in which to deposit found trash and cigarette butts.

Inspiring stuff! Hope you stick with them!! I’ll stick with the three Rs: reduce what I buy, reuse what I can and recycle what I can’t

Sounds like a smart, simple, unfailing way to go!

One of my new year’s resolutions is also to figure out how to compost in my teenie apartment. This can be tricky.
I’m also going to try to buy more local products and to make my indie biz even more sustainable.
Good luck to everyone trying to live a greener lifestyle in 2009!

I’m going to try harder to only buy the amount of food I will use. I’m pretty good about local and organic, but as a cook, sometimes I just can’t resist buying some delicious ingredients without a recipe in mind. And inevitably, those are the things that go bad sitting in my fridge. I guess I’ll just have to get a little more creative this year!

Lydia–The Happy Farmer Composter (http://www.amazon.com/Happy-Farmer-Composting-KIT-Black/dp/B000TKHJAU) might be a good apartment option–I’m thinking of using that instead of my worm bin until I have a patch of my own land. Plus, it only takes two weeks to turn into compost. Good luck!
Amy–Funny you mention that–KCRW’s Good Food had a recent show about how not to waste food and, as a chef, Even Kleiman surely feels your pain.

I’m not that good at keeping resolutions, but I think I have a chance this year with my reusable grocery bags thing. I got some that are small enough to fit in my purse (http://www.breezybags.com).
But the biggest thing is that I’m focusing my job search within biking distance of my house.

Michelle–
Great bag find–those are new to me. (I can’t, however, find what they’re made of.)
Biking to work in 09 sounds like the perfect ingredient for a simpler, better, healthier 09. Good luck!!
