Weekend Guide
GO FOR THE GOLD
If the Olympics have inspired your inner athlete, get off the boob tube and go out and play. Check out CoEdSportsLA.com to find pickup games throughout L.A. in a variety of team sports. Aspiring Michael Phelps fans should check out the ydt Archive for the H2O article to find the aquatic center near you.
.
TASTE BEIJING
After a hard workout, you definitely need to refuel. Check out one of L.A.’s best tastes in Chinese cuisine. Yang Chow has been in business for over 30 years in historic Chinatown. They now have two additional locations in Pasadena and Canoga Park. Try their world famous Slippery Shrimp – my fortune cookie tells me you won’t be disappointed. Chinatown location at 819 N. Broadway, Los Angeles, 90012.
GIVE BACK WITH YOUR GREEN THUMB
Join the Million Trees L.A. Project and L.A. Department of Rec and Parks in Griffith Park to help care for the young trees they planted there after last year’s fierce fire season. The event takes place on Saturday August 23rd from 9 a.m. to noon. It has been a hot summer and the trees need some serious TLC. To volunteer or for more information, contact Lisa Sotelo at (818) 623-4879 or email volunteer@treepeople.org.
MUSIC AFFICIONADO MEETS SUNSET JUNCTION
Silver Lake’s famous music festival and street fair is in full swing this weekend, and celebrating its 28th year. Check out their musical line up here. If you are new to L.A. or have never gone, it definitely deserves a spot on your agenda. Presale tickets are available now for $15; they’re $20 at the event. Parking is limited so taking public trans, carpooling or bicycling is encouraged. And yes, bike valet is provided. For more information, check out their site here.
SPEAK EASY SUNDAYS
The Edison Downtown is opening up its Radio Room (a few doors down from the main entrance) on Sunday nights only for 125 guests who are “in the know.” There will be live jazz performances, hors d’oeuvres, and vintage cocktails especially prepared by the “featured” barman or woman of the evening. Dress to impress: that means jackets, collared shirts, and all that jazz. Leave the flip-flops, shorts and beachwear at home. The Edison Downtown is located at 108 W 2nd St., L.A., 90012. Phone: (213) 613-0000.
