As a person who has dealt with a bad back for the last few years, I thought I had discovered most of the healing arts that would be beneficial. But, as the saying goes, “you can always learn something new.” That is what happened when I met Marcela Widrig, who introduced me to The Grinberg Method. The Grinberg Method (The GM) incorporates bodywork, touch, exercise, and speech to teach people through their bodies to make the changes they wish for. Through the practice you access the entire range of human experience. It’s already popular in Europe and Israel, and has recently begun making its way to the U.S.
I was fortunate to get invited into her Atwater Village studio where she practices. After a nice discussion about my personal history and an examination of my life’s traces on my feet, I began to receive the body treatment. Though I have only experienced one session, I did leave with a sense of movement in my lower back, a place normally so tight that it is difficult to move
While visiting the studio, I learned firsthand about Marcela’s work with The GM, which she has been practicing since 1997. She discovered the work in 1993, when she was living in Barcelona and suffering from migraines and intense occasional insomnia. The GM gave her the ability to learn how she created these conditions and the tools to stop them. She said, “It was quite magical, to learn I could make real changes to things I thought were just a part of me. I was gaining back the parts of me that I had lost, and my perception of life was changing.”
This experience made her want to study The GM and to become a licensed trainer. What draws her most to the Method is that it directly touches people’s hurts and fears, “To teach people to be a body in this world that more and more is driven by our minds is a very special and unique thing. Our minds will usually take us back to familiar places – old and repetitive ways of being, thinking and emoting; through the body we can constantly discover new things about ourselves and the world around us.”She recommends The GM to anyone who wants to change something in their lives from chronic physical conditions to moods, or ways of being. The GM will teach the individual how s/he is creating a current state (physically, emotionally, mentally) and then teach how to stop doing so and move beyond these limitations into something new.
