th: weekend guide: Take Advantage of Your Summer in L.A.
July 31st, 2008. Written By Elena Crevello.DRINK: Brew Haw Haw! August is here and we are nearing the end of summer, but before we bid goodbye to my favorite season let’s try to take advantage of the many outdoor events Los Angeles has to offer. The first annual Brew Haw Haw is an outdoor beer festival that benefits cystic fibrosis. There will be live performances, music, food and beer from microbreweries all around! Tickets are $50 a person and MUST be purchased in advance. Event Info: Saturday, August 2nd from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m at the Autry National Center. To purchase tickets, visit losangeles.cff.org/brewhawhaw or email Kaitlyn @ kfitzgibbons@cff.org.
FOR FREE: Jazz by Quetzal Guerrero. As part of Grand Performances Summer series, this violinist/singer/guitarist/percussionist will be playing his music at noon on Friday at the California Plaza downtown. This is not the typical jazz you would hear in a smoky bar in New York (I know smoking isn’t allowed there anymore, but just bear with me here) — the music instead is a mix of Brazilian and Mexican sounds with a jazzy influence. Get your fill of free fun and expand your mind man… Event Info: Friday, August 1st at 12 p.m. 300 Block of S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, 90071. For more info, click here.
SUNDAY FUN-DAY: Blue Velvet Pool Downtown. Sundays can be depressing: work is beginning to taunt you, your hangover is luring you back to bed and you probably shouldn’t have had that pizza pie at 3 a.m. this morning. Instead of putting on Sinead O’Connor and crying about it, why not head downtown to Blue Velvet? Their rooftop lounge and pool hosts a party every Sunday to help you unwind from the weekend and prepare for the week ahead. Event Info: Sunday, August 3rd from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 750 S. Garland Ave., Los Angeles, 90017. For more info, click here.
LAUGH: UCB’s “The Most F’ed Up Night of Our Lives”. UCB (Upright Citizens Brigade) is home to Los Angeles’ best long form improv and fresh comedy talent. On Friday, join veteran members John Bowie, Sean Conroy and Nick Kroll at this sketch show that will bring you to tears… hopefully because of laughter. Event Info: Friday, August 1st at 8 p.m. at 5919 Franklin Ave., Los Angeles, 90028. BE IN AWE: Dolly Parton at the Greek Theatre. The lady who gave this world the song of all songs, “Jolene,” will be performing this Sunday at the Greek Theatre. Along with some of her classics, she will be singing songs from her new album Backwoods Barbie. Ok, so I haven’t heard anything from her new record, but it’s Dolly Parton! I’m telling you, the show will be amazing… anyone want to buy me a ticket? No? Ok, it’s fine guys. I’ll just bring my binoculars, shimmy up a tree nearby and hope for fair weather. Event Info: Sunday, August 3rd at 8 p.m. In Griffith Park, 2700 North Vermont, Los Angeles, 90027. For more info, click here.
