Tuesday—Green Living:
Green Away from Home

If you’ve got out of town visitors coming or want a weekend getaway sans airline flights, waits, bag fees or emissions, consider L.A.’s own green hotel offerings in three different pockets of town:

Hotel Palomar

Westwood: L.A.’s Newest Eco-Luxe Accommodations are at Hotel Palomar. Luxury aside, it implements nuts and bolts environmental practices like in-room recycling bins, energy-efficient lighting, eco-friendly cleaning products and water-saving bathroom hardware. And even though the decor is not anything uniquely green, many of its practices are downright commendable. In fact, the parent company, Kimpton Hotels, has earned a number of awards for its EarthCare Program.

Hotel Palomar Westwood
is located at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. at Selby Avenue,
Los Angeles, CA 90024. Phone: (800) 472.8556 or (310) 475.8711. Web: http://www.hotelpalomar-lawestwood.com.

Ambrose Hotel

Santa Monica: The Ambrose is probably the mother of L.A. hotels in this movement. LED exit signs? Check. Cell phone recycling drop-off? Check. No Styrofoam in sight? Check. Hybrid rentals? Check. Even organic mattresses? Check. The Ambrose also plays well with others, partnering with organic neighbor, Urth Caffe. This place is the real deal. Get the whole scoop here.

The Ambrose is located at 2043 Colorado Avenue Suite 5
. Santa Monica, California 90404
.
Phone: (310) 382-2145. Web: http://www.ambrosehotel.com.

Los Feliz Lodge Los Feliz Lodge

Los Feliz: A handful of bungalows comprise the Los Feliz Lodge. Apartments turned little inns, each has its own kitchen and living space surrounded by drought-tolerant gardens so you can settle into lodging that feels like home. As little things add up, low VOC paints plus organic cotton linens plus recycled vintage furniture and fabrics plus sun tubes in closets and bathrooms equals absolutely charming and environmentally-conscious. Down to every last detail like providing reusable shopping bags for guests on their walking journeys about town and installing refillable dispensers with natural shampoo to save packaging, the little Los Feliz Lodge is an East Side gem (and my personal favorite from the list).

Los Feliz Lodge located at 1507 North Hoover Street, Los Angeles 90027.
Phone: (323) 913-1443. Web: http://www.losfelizlodge.com.

  2. [...] GREEN SEAL. A Green Seal means that a household product like a cleaner, paint or floor finish is made with non-toxic and low impact ingredients. According to Rodale, it’s the “most rigorous certification program for household cleaning products,” and because of that you don’t see it much. In fact, I opt for making my own cleaners (or could buy from a trusted brand like Seventh Generation or another all-natural company with cred). Green Seal is also working on an eco-lodging program in Chicago and here in L.A. (Or see three of the hotels that have already gone green in Los Angeles.) [...]
