Remember the days of the general store? (Me either, but I’ve seen one on Little House on the Prairie.) It was a place to pick up what you need to get by, have a conversation, and connect with your community. L.A.’s newest green living store, Green and Greener in the Valley, rekindles that same old-fashioned idea, but with a new twist—everything it carries is totally eco-friendly.

G &G has the range of household goods a big box store carries, without the big box. Instead, this store is a small rectangle full of all the necessities of life, from tissue to paint putty to cleaning supplies to doggie toys to body care delights—all merchandise that fulfills a need in a conscious, sustainable way.

Alegre Ramos, owner and LEED certified interior designer, believes in going “beyond the bottom line and bling” in her design and retail philosophy. With her design projects, she creates beautiful and highly functional spaces that have the environment in mind. With her store, she provides “a place where people do the homework [on green products] for you.” You can rest assured that thought has gone into each and every product (and the shelf upon which it rests!)

The general store motif doesn’t end there. Ramos’s sister shares the floor with her and her husband does operations while he (along with Ramos herself) did a fair share of the hands on work of remodeling their space. (When you visit you can admire the register counter he made from existing plywood around the windows and the exquisite LED lamp she fashioned from champagne bottles that hangs above it).

So, hop on your horse and buggy, or bicycle, and check in with L.A.’s old-timey, new-fangled green general store.
