m: active lifestyle: L.A. Has Fresh Air?

June 30th, 2008. Written By Tracy Hepler.

Last weekend was my godmother’s birthday, and being an avid hiker, she insisted that we all go on her favorite hike through Bronson Canyon over the Hollywood Sign. She wanted to take us to a beloved little tree whose patch of ground overlooks Hollywood on one side and Griffith Park and Burbank on the other. Despite the record-breaking heat, we all marched behind her and toting plenty of water to keep us hydrated ☺. Despite my complaints, the destination is worth the blood, sweat and tears I shed that day. After all, where else can you see all the way from Down Town to Santa Monica, and the expansive San Fernando Valley as well?

The Hollywood Hills aren’t the only place to find trails. Despite a skyline that can look like flat, suburban sprawl, Los Angeles is full of excellent places to hike. But if you are like I was six months ago and have no idea where to start, LAMountains.com is a resource for you.

LAMountains.com is maintained by the Mountains Recreation and Conservatory Authority. It provides information on area parks, beaches, hiking, biking, equestrian trails, and, of course, dog parks all through Los Angeles. It has an easy search feature that allows you to search by mountain region or you can get as specific as zip code.

The site also has an updated events calendar, and various ways to volunteer and get involved, all while appreciating the outdoors. If you’re looking for an outdoor place to have a wedding or other event, its staff can help you plan and pick out the park that is perfect for your special day.

One of the best things about Southern California is our access to natural beauty, so don’t waste your summer away with the AC on. Get outside, get some fresh air, and go explore what L.A. truly has to offer.
