w: wellness & beauty: Fair Trade Skin Care
May 21st, 2008. Written By Lauren Johanson.By now I’m sure you know how important it is to be mindful of what you put on your skin. Let’s take it one step beyond organic, and talk about Fair Trade, specifically three Fair Trade skin care companies right here in Southern California.
.
Anti-Body
This Sierra Madre-based company stands for anti-poverty, beautiful-body. They offer an array of skin care products made with Fair Trade shea butter and marula oil from Togo and Botswana. My favorite product? The Lemongrass Hand and Body Moisturizer because the scent reminds me of my time in Thailand. My favorite aspect of the company? Co-owner Tamara Johnston-McMahon recently traveled to Liberia to start a Fair Trade cooperative that will produce coconut oil. You can learn more about their “Coconut Campaign,” as well as view their full product line at www.anti-body.com.
.
Chivas Skin Care
Our Ventura-based company partners with Anti-Body to purchase Fair Trade shea butter as an emollient in our all-natural goat milk soap. We have also partnered with The Nomad Foundation to donate goats to the Tuareg tribe in Niger. My favorite product? The Original Goat Milk Soap because it is so gentle and moisturizing. My favorite aspect of the company? My mother and I hand make each batch of soap using fresh goat milk from our own French Alpine goats. Plus, we will be offering ydt readers 15% off at www.chivasskincare.com. Discount Code: ydt15perc (valid until June 30th, 2008).
.
Bronner’s Magic Soap
This Escondido-based company is celebrating its 60th anniversary and what’s not to celebrate with the recent Organic and Fair Trade certification of their liquid and bar soaps? My favorite product? The Peppermint Liquid Soap because it comes in a great travel size for camping. My favorite aspect of the company? In the last five years, Dr. Bronner’s spending on social and environmental causes and charities has roughly matched its total after-tax income. One reason they can afford this is that executive compensation is capped at five times that of the lowest-paid position. Their website www.drbronner.com offers a plethora of information.

I’m a big fan of the Chivas Skin Care products, my two favorites are their bar soaps and their lip balm. The soaps not only smell great, but feel great on your skin and lather really well. There is no excessive film on your skin after using it and you know you are using ingredients that are ACTUALLY good for your skin! The lip balm is super moisturizing and has none of the chemical ingredients that are so bad for you. It honestly one of the top lip balms I have ever used! I’ve gotten my boyfriend and my whole family hooked.
