m: active lifestyle: A Green Thumb for L.A.
April 28th, 2008. Written By Tracy Hepler.
A Million Trees for L.A. is what the city has proposed, and why not? A million new trees would do us good.
The Initiative: “Our Legacy for Change”.
-The planting of a million new trees will help the city transform from its current concrete haven to a green, sustainable city.
-Our actions would create an environmental legacy that will only add to the catalyst for further environmental changes.
The Who: A Community Effort.
-Many trees will be planted by city departments on public property. Individuals and community groups can participate, too! The trees planted will receive long-term stewardship as well.
How: Get Some Exercise and Get Out There!
-Plant a tree in your own back yard. If you don’t have a yard, join a volunteer group who has access to land.
-Organize or participate in a community planting through non-profit or business groups–a great team building/bonding opportunity. (Be on the look out for a ydt planting soon!)
-If garden work isn’t your thing, and your green thumb turns things brown, consider making a donation to the cause.
*Free Trees for LADWP Customers: According to the Million Trees Website,
“customers receiving electricity from the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power can receive free shade trees through the “Trees for a Green L. A.” program. To qualify, take an on-line workshop or attend a neighborhood workshop”.
These trees will clean our air and water quality, provide us with shade, save on energy costs, reduce greenhouse gases, and of course, beautify our city.
** Trees that are native and drought tolerant are recommended.
