The City of Los Angeles has declared Earth Day, April 22nd, a car free day. Yes, that’s right, the city of four wheels will be choosing two, six, or none at all—at least we hope so.

ydt is here to provide resources for you to get around carless, so whether it’s a holiday, gas prices, getting exercise, getting out, or limiting your personal pollution that motivates you, you can get where you want to go sans your own private automobile. (But if you’re still not convinced you want to get out of your car, you can listen to or read this npr piece on the cost of the suburbs in their “Climate Connections” series or rent The End of Suburbia before next Tuesday.

If you opt for bus or rail riding, plan your trip at L.A. County Metro online. And you may want to end up at Union Station downtown at noon so you can have your lunch and listen to a free concert by Canon.

By the beach you can take advantage of the Big Blue Bus and even visit its swanky new store in Santa Monica.

If you prefer to get your exercise, plan your route with Metro’s L.A. Bike Map or get off the concrete with
L.A. Bike Paths’ map of bikeable scenic routes.

If walking is more your speed, visit walkscore, a site where once you plug in your address it tells you how walkable your neighborhood is on a scale of one to ten. No matter your score, it can point you in the direction of on foot destinations that you may have missed driving by.

Finally, pledge to go beyond one car free day and free yourself from gas prices and high emissions a certain number of days every month.
