Weekend Guide

CULTURE: Flamenco and Tapas at El Cid
Wednesdays through Sundays at this historic venue features Flamenco dancing and authentic Spanish cuisine. Whether you have a craving for Manchego cheese, or are just looking to be entertained, this event will fill the Spanish void that lies deep in your heart. El Cid, which was originally a screening house for D.W. Griffith, was renovated in the ‘60s to resemble a 17th century Spanish tavern. So if atmosphere is what you are looking for, you can find it at El Cid.
The shows are generally at 8 p.m., and $35 a ticket.

CONTRIBUTE: Ballona Wetlands Conservation
“Ballona what?” I’m assuming that’s what you are thinking right now. And I’m right. Ballona Wetlands is that marshy area in Playa Vista/ Marina Del Ray that you have most likely driven over and thought to yourself “Where the hell am I? Who knew Los Angeles had marshes?” Well Los Angeles doesn’t, and Ballona is the LAST wetland ecosystem left in Southern California. On the second Saturday of each month, i.e. this weekend, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. volunteers are invited on tours of the area, and to come help with some clean up. And if trudging through a marsh with egrets and nature all around you doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you can always be in it for the raffle prizes and refreshments!

FUN: First Fridays
Feeling finicky, and looking for fun on Friday? Feel free to go to First Fridays!!! Ok, but all alliteration aside (this is assonance, doesn’t count… don’t get me started), you should definitely check out this event that happens the first Friday of every month at the L.A. Museum of Natural History. There are guided discussions on this month’s topic, “Discovery in the Age of Mammals: Building Brains and Making Minds,” and DJs spinning throughout the night, along with live performances by Why? and YACHT. This event generally sells out, so get there early or book your tickets ahead of time. Alcohol and food are available at the event, and all food is by Mission Bistro an organic restaurant.
