Spas have become an icon for our modern understanding of Health and Beauty: white terrycloth robes, flimsy flip flops and “peaceful” music. For those of us who aren’t used to pampering ourselves, the Spa experience can sometimes seem silly or intimidating…or at least it was for me.

But then my birthday rolled around and I was treated for a facial at rA Organic Spa. Here are a number of reasons why I like rA Organic Spa:

• The aestheticians are knowledgeable and friendly, providing personalized treatments according to your needs. They, of course, use high-quality Organic products during the treatment that are also available in their storefront.

• All of the facials include a paraffin wax hand remedy and pressure point foot massage. I think I enjoyed the massage as much as the actual facial.

• While the spa does not offer amenities such as saunas or Jacuzzis, it creates a sense of intimacy… Buddha statues, candles, rose petal fountains and all.

• It is located on a fun, little strip in Burbank that reminds me of a Main Street back East. Plus, being over the hill from Hollywood means more reasonable prices.

• And the “happy ending” you receive is an exotic young coconut with fresh coconut water. Yum!

When I walked out of rA Organic Spa, I not only felt as though my skin glowed, but I also felt inspired to maintain a regular facial routine at home. The utilitarian in me believes that visiting a spa every few months is valuable for one major reason – it is a good way to refresh, and perhaps reinvent, your personal health and beauty routine. Just as Yogic philosophy recommends fasting and meditation retreats as ways to “reset” your internal buttons, I feel that seasonal spa visits can help you recommit to maintaining your inner and outer beauty.

Ever feel as though spas are too self-indulgent? Remember another Yogic philosophy – in order to serve others, you must first master your own being. Go ahead, pamper yourself! How’s that for a little self-justification?
