Healthy Spot, the eco-friendly and fun dog care facility in Santa Monica, truly lives up to its name. This one-of a kind “spot” is not just a grooming facility, but rather an all-out playful and luxurious experience for your canine companion. Owners Andrew Kim and Mark Boonark believe that pets are an extension of the family and have created a space that is welcoming and comfortable for your furriest family member.
“Spa treatments,” “doggie daycare” and “puppy preschool” are some of the services you can choose from. All of the products used in the “spa treatments” are safe for the environment and your dog. Plus, they serve 100% natural food with vegetarian and vegan options!

The demeanors of the Healthy Spot staff matched the surrounding bright and cheery décor as they ushered me and my own canine companion into the expansive studio. Max, my adorable and furry best friend, was attacked by a coyote three years ago. Although fully recovered, he can be tentative and skittish from time to time. The staff handled Max with the utmost care and dignity and at the end of his treatment that included a clean cut for summer, Max was smiling…yes, smiling!
Another reason I love Healthy Spot is because they have partnered with the non-profit fundraising organization, A Walk for the Underdog. The organization is dedicated to raising funds for over 30 animal shelters and rescue shelters in Los Angeles as well as bringing awareness to animal welfare.
Healthy Spot is located at 1110 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica, 90401. Phone: (310) 458 - 2004. Web: www.healthyspotla.com

Indoor air is often more polluted, much more polluted, than what we’re breathing outdoors (even with that layer of gray blanketing the hills). Why? Aside from formaldehyde in pressed wood furniture, vinyl in window treatments, and the overall ickiness of carpet, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from paints and finishes are a big culprit.
While we banned lead’s paint presence at the end of the 70s, VOCs have remained. They are what you’re smelling when you don a smock and grab a roller to splash some color on your walls - toxic off gassing that isn’t good for the world or the lungs of any living thing in the vicinity.
But all that’s beginning to change. More and more companies are churning out low or no VOC formulas to enliven your space, sans chemicals, sans smell. This allows for kids, pets, and everybody else to get in on the painting action safely. So, if you’re looking to add some ambience to your living room this summer, look no further than two Los Angeles stores that carry non-toxic paint with zero VOCs to be mixed to match any palette you choose.
Livingreen in Culver City: Pretty much the forerunner of green retailing in L.A., Livingreen offers low or no VOC paint and can match almost any color of the rainbow. Featured paint brands: Yolo Colorhouse, American Pride and Green Planet’s all-natural clay paints. Livingreen is located at 1000 Culver Boulevard, Culver City, 90232. Phone: (310) 838-8442. Web: http://www1.livingreen.com/.
.
Jill’s Paint in Atwater Village : Jill’s is an old-fashioned specialty paint store whose stock of supplies includes a commitment to environmentally-friendly alternatives. Featured paint brands: Divine Green and Yolo Colorhouse. Jill’s also has a number of Sydney Harbor Paint Company remodeling products from wood stain to lime wash, all without VOCs. Jill’s Paint is located at 3534 Larga Avenue, Los Angeles, 90039. Web: http://www.jillspaint.net.
You can also shop online for Old Fashioned Milk Paint made from, you guessed it, milk.

ydt EVENT: “Green Collar Job Mixer” this Wednesday. Learn more below.

It’s hard to escape the news about the state of the economy these days. Whether it’s the federal chairman discussing a “recession,” the term “bear” in front of market or hundreds of people lined up outside of Los Angeles-area Indy Mac Banks, it seems that tough times are turning up everywhere
Americans are known for our resiliency and determination, our ability to make the best out of bad situations. Despite all this dreary talk about the economy, a new, exciting industry is emerging. The green business sector is taking off like never before (and subsequently creating more jobs). As our old ways of working are becoming less financially viable and sustainable, large corporations are looking to new innovations and new ways of thinking; many growing out of the green movement.
If you are currently seeking a job or are eco-job curious, a great resource for you is the Eco Investment Club of Greater Los Angeles. According to their website they provide, “A platform for networking and education in the areas of green investing, sustainable investing, green building, green products, and green jobs.” Their motto: “Where green dollars fund the green movement.”
The club offers different levels of membership and price ranges. Learn more here. You don’t have to be a member to attend many of the networking events or “Green Meets” though. They are hosting a free “Green Collar Job Mixer” this Wednesday, July 23rd from 7 to 10 p.m. at Thexposure Studio in Hollywood. The featured speaker of the night will be Jan Schalwijk from JPS Global Investments.
Space is limited so please RSVP here. For more event details, visit our Events Calendar.

ydt UPDATE: The ydt + Raw Bags giveaway ends today, July 18th! Fill out our online survey here to enter the sweepstakes and win your own adorable bamboo clutch!
When I found out I’d have the opportunity to try a Red Carpet Cleanse from raw foods chef September Death, I was both excited and a little apprehensive. Sure, I love broccoli and all, but no French fries or meat or even sushi for three whole days? Wouldn’t I be…I don’t know…hungry?
The Red Carpet Cleanse is designed to flush out the toxic chemicals ingested from processed foods, which helps speed up metabolism and lessen the stress on our digestive system. Ingredients include fresh, raw and organic leafy green vegetables, seaweeds, sprouts, nuts and seeded fruits, all designed to pack a nutritional punch. There is no wheat, dairy, animal products, gluten, or processed foods, and everything is prepared under 118 degrees. Even the water used in the juices, smoothies and soups is distilled and hexagonally structured because it hydrates cells faster and more thoroughly than regular water.
.
I waited anxiously for my first food delivery to arrive. It came in a cooler filled to the brim with all my nourishment for the day in various boxes and glass jars and bottles. Each cooler included two meals, two super food smoothies, one elixir, one soup and two whole food supplements with an instructional menu detailing when and what to eat throughout the day.
So you might be wondering - how’d it go? Honestly, given the chance, I’d definitely do it all over again. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of the menu - after all, how many ways could you prepare spinach raw? A lot, apparently, and each one was delicious.
A typical day’s menu included Sprouted Spirulina Buckwheat Cereal with Cinnamon Almond Milk for breakfast, flavorful Spinach Dill “Perogies” and chilled Creamy Cucumber Soup for lunch, and a tasty Zucchini Pesto “Pasta” for dinner. Every entrée was a gourmet dish, and most importantly, I never went hungry. If I felt like I was in need of a snack, I could indulge in Electrolyte Green Lemonade or refreshing Chlorophyll Sippers during the day. At the end of the day three, I was a couple of pounds lighter with a lot more energy than usual.
The Red Carpet Cleanse is perfect for a summer detox or slimming down for a special event - plus, it’s completely painless when the food tastes so good. After the third day of the cleanse, I didn’t even miss French fries anymore!
.

You can purchase your own Red Carpet Cleanse at www.redcarpetcleanses.com.
